3D digitization and visualization of Quaternary type material
From the type specimen collection of the Senckenberg Research Station of Quaternary Palaeontology Weimar a series of selected fossil specimens was photogrammetrically digitized in real colors and then visualized. The 3D models are available in Open Access.
Currently, 120 high-quality digitized copies of the type material can be used in the form of dense point clouds as well as textured 3D meshes. Users can view the interactive objects from all perspectives using various tools. The enlargement of any surface details is just as possible as an extremely precise measurement of individually definable measurement sections in three-dimensional space.
The project was funded by the Thuringian Ministry for Economy, Science and Digital Society (TMWWDG).
In order to make further type material from the Weimar collections available for virtual use it is planned to proceed the project.
Users of the 3D models have also direct access to the respective initial descriptions of the types via permalinks, insofar as this is currently permitted by copyright and usage rights.
